Product Overview

The Tone Claw is a robust spring claw engineered with a locking clamp plate to lock the springs down at the hoop ends. CNC-machined from solid brass and at 4x the mass of a traditional claw, the Tone Claw is designed to increase sustain and enhance tonal qualities while also aiding tuning stability by preventing the springs from shifting or popping out during heavy tremolo use.

With a traditional claw, the vibrational energy transferred from the sustain block through the springs dissipates as it reaches the claw because of the poor contact area between the spring hoop ends and the standard claw tabs, as well as the thinness of a standard tin plate. The Tone Claw's locking clamp plate, in conjunction with the form-fitting posts (where the spring hoop ends connect), significantly increases the contact between the springs and claw. Instead of ending its path, this vibrational energy from the springs is transferred into the Tone Claw and sent back through the springs and into the sustain block thus improving sustain.

Installation is easy and a direct swap for most existing spring claws such as those from Fender, Floyd Rose, PRS, Ibanez, and many others. The kit includes the Tone Claw base and sliding clamp, two claw mounting screws, and four quality coiled steel tremolo springs. An adjustable ground soldering tab is also integrated which can be switched between two available mounting holes depending on the required orientation. Available in either raw brass or a nickel-plated finish

Please measure your spring cavity to ensure a proper fit before ordering!

Looks Over The Top But Extremely Effective

Posted by Richard C on Mar 27th 2023

I have bought 6 of these Tone Claws for my Strats, and I heard the same significant increase in chime, sustain and volume in each case. The guitars ring out noticeably louder when played unplugged. If one thinks about it, even though the trem claw seems far removed from the string vibrations, any vibrations that travel through the trem block and springs will likely dissipate on an unanchored spring. By introducing a solid anchor for the springs, vibrations are more likely to continue ringing rather than being lost into the ether. I tell all my guitar buddies about the Tone Claw and I'm going to continue using them whenever I can.

    Surprisingly Effective

I'm a tweak junkie in that there is almost no tweak that I won't try. Even so I was initially skeptical that a tone claw would make a difference since it's so far downstream of the vibrating string. Then I found that a pair of stainless steel tone-claw screws made a slight difference (on the order of 5%, if that) so I figured a much more robustly built tone claw would make at least as much of a difference as the stainless tone-claw screws. The thing works! I heard audibly louder and firmer tones with greater chime versus those coming from a standard tone claw. In fact, I made before/after recordings of the unplugged guitar on my cell phone so as not to rely on my aural memory, and the differences were clearly audible (and preferable to me). I've installed 4 Tone Claws and I heard similar improvements in each guitar, and I'll probably buy more. I realize that the changes may not be everyone's cup of tea, particularly if one is wedded to the concept of how a Strat "should sound" unplugged. For me though, I'm much more inclined to play my guitars unplugged just because they sound great as they are. (Full disclosure: I've made similar tweaks to the neck plate, neck-pate screws, and trem block so that cumulatively, I really like the way they sound.) Finally I recommend using the included springs that are springier, more flexible, and have a slight tonal improvement over the standard springs to my ears, plus it's an easy test to hear whether the two sets of springs sound any different at all.

Wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Increased sustain. Very well crafted piece I must say.
